A Road Less Traveled - Music for Tuba and Piano - Craig Knox & Rodrigo Ojeda

Anthony Plog (b. 1947)
Three Miniatures (1990)
Full Track Time (3 tracks): 6:40

This piece in three short movements has become a favorite ever since it was composed for Daniel Perantoni in 1990 by Anthony Plog, a trumpeter who has become one of the most prolific composers of music for brass instruments. Jazzy, lyrical, and full of energy (Melton/Meinl Weston 2250 F tuba).

L. Ray Strobel (b. 1971)
Dans Profundo (2008)
Full Track Time: 5:04

This is a relatively new piece, heard here in its first commercial recording. After a long solo tuba cadenza, the music moves into a sultry mixed-meter dance which intensifies to the end. Influenced by traditional Eastern-European harmonies and styles, this is a decidedly original - and fun - new work for the tuba (Melton/Meinl Weston 2250 F tuba).

Anthony DiLorenzo (b. 1967)
Sonata for Tuba and Piano (2011)
Full Track Time (3 tracks): 17:40

This is a brand new piece, composed for Craig Knox and this recording. Anthony DiLorenzo is a trumpet player and colleague of Craig's in the Center City Brass Quintet. He is also a busy composer, whose works have been performed by the San Francisco Symphony, the New York Philharmonic Brass Quintet, as well as on network television and the big screen. He is well-known for his arrangements and original compositions for brass, as recorded by the Center City Brass Quintet and Burning River Brass, among others. This Sonata is a substantial, full-length work in three movements, which is sure to become part of the standard repertoire (Melton/Meinl Weston 2250 F tuba).

John Stevens (b. 1951)
Autumn (2009)
Full Track Time: 5:07

This hauntingly beautiful and melancholy melody is the composer's adaptation of the third movement of his brass quintet Seasons. Many tuba players are familiar with John Stevens' many other works for tuba, particularly Journey, the concerto commissioned by the Chicago Symphony for Gene Pokorny (Melton/Meinl Weston 2250 F tuba).

Guissepi Verdi (1813-1901)/arr. Paul Krzywicki
Prelude from I Masnadieri (1847)
Full Track Time: 4:33

Paul Krzywicki, tubist of the Philadelphia Orchestra from 1972-2005, made this arrangement of the Prelude from Verdi's opera I Masnadieri (The Bandits), which is originally a cello solo with orchestral accompaniment. Alexey Lebedev (1924-1993)
Concert Allegro (1949)
Full Track Time: 6:15

Lebedev was a tubist at the Bolshoi Theater and a professor at the Moscow Conservatory, and he wrote many etudes and solos for the tuba, including this piece, which has become a standard in the tuba repertoire. The style is fully romantic and lyrical. This track was performed on the 6450/2 "Baer" CC tuba (Melton/Meinl Weston 6450/2 CC tuba).

Jan Krzywicki (b. 1948)
Ballade (1968/83)
Full Track Time: 5:10

Jan Krzywicki is a Philadelphia composer and Professor at Temple University. He is also the brother of Paul Krzywicki, former long-time tubist of the Philadelphia Orchestra, for whom the piece was composed. As its title implies, it is a smooth, expressive song for tuba and piano. (Melton/Meinl Weston 2250 F tuba).
